How do I Check the Front Axle Oil on a 2003 4WD Trailblazer?

Checking the fluid level in the differentials in your Trailblazer will alert you to a problem before you damage the internal components of the differential. The oil in the differential serves several purposes. Along with lubricating the bearings and gears, it cools the gears by reducing friction as the spin against each other. If the oil level falls to low, the gears and bearings may over heat, damaging the differential and cost a lot to repair.

Instructions

    • 1

Slide under the front of your Trailblazer, in front of the axle and differential. Do not raise the front of the truck or the ready will be incorrect.

    • 2

Locate the fill plug on the front of the differential housing. Position a drain pan on the ground under the differential then remove the fill plug with a wrench.

    • 3

If oil seeps out, it is full. If it does not seep out, place your pinkie finger into the hole to feel if the oil is at the bottom of the hole. If it is, the differential is full. If it is not, you will need to add oil to it until it reaches the bottom of the hole.

Replace the plug in the differential and tighten it with a wrench. It just needs to be snug, but do not tighten it to a point that you cannot get it out later. Remove the drip pan and climb out from under the truck.
