Embroidering a gift for a baby can be complicated, but you can make a piece by using a simple embroidery technique on plastic canvas mesh. Even children can make embroidery projects with plastic canvas mesh and yarn, which is a craft suitable for people of all ages. Embroider a cross-stitched coaster for a baby bottle, which allows new parents to set it down without making a mess. Cross stitch together a small gift basket for new parents, and fill it with items they can use for their baby.

  • Plastic canvas mesh
  • Large-eye plastic needle
  • Ruler
  • White yarn
  • Pink yarn
  • Blue yarn
  • Permanent marker

Instructions

  1. Embroider a Baby Bottle Coaster

    • 1

      Measure out a 4-inch square on a sheet of plastic canvas mesh. Cut out the square shape to make the bottle coaster.

      Write the words "It's a Boy" or "It's a Girl" directly on the square shape with a permanent market.

      Use pink or blue yarn to cross stitch over the words on the coaster. Create embroidery stitches by making half cross-stitches from left to right across the plastic canvas mesh.

      Use white yarn to embroider the rest of the rows on the coaster.

      Embroider around the edges of the coaster with either pink or blue yarn.

    Embroider a Baby Gift Basket

      Measure out a 10-inch square on a sheet of plastic canvas mesh for the base of the basket. Cut the square shape out of the plastic canvas mesh.

      Measure out four rectangles are each 5 by 10 inches on a sheet of plastic canvas mesh, which will be the sides of the baby basket.

      Measure out one rectangle that is 3 by 15 inches on a sheet of plastic canvas mesh, which will be the handle of the baby basket.

      Write the words "It's a Boy" or "It's a Girl" directly on two of the rectangular sides of the basket with a permanent market.

      Use pink or blue yarn to cross-stitch over the words on the two rectangles. Embroider the rest of these rectangles and the other 5 by 10 inch rectangles with white yarn.

      Embroider the 10-inch square base with white yarn.

      Embroider the 3- by 15-inch rectangle for the handle with white yarn. Use either pink or blue yarn to embroider around the edges of the rectangle.

      Attach one of the 5- by 10-inch rectangles to the 10-inch square base by carefully sewing together edge where these two meet with either pink or blue yarn. Choose the same color of yarn to use for sewing the entire basket together.

      Attach the next side to the basket by sewing together the edge its shares with the first side you sewed on the basket. Attach each new side of the basket to the base by sewing these together along the edge shared with the base. Repeat the process of sewing together the adjoining edges of each side of the basket.

      Add the handle to the basket by embroidering it to each side of the basket.

      Fill the cross-stitched basket with gifts for the baby, such as diapers, bibs and baby bottles

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have extra yarn and plastic canvas mesh leftover, you can make the parents of the baby an embroidered coasters for enjoying a cups of tea when the baby is asleep.

  • Make sure to center the handle before stitching it to the body of the basket.

  • Create simple patterns and words to embroider by using the grid layout of the the plastic canvas mesh to draw these on with a permanent marker.
