• Sewing machine

Instructions

Sewing a Hidden Zipper

1. 

   A hidden zipper gives a garment a finished look.

   Most patterns instruct the seamstress to install the zipper before the seam it sets in is sewn. However this causes bunching and bubbles. To eliminate this, mark where the bottom of the zipper should set then sew the pant seam closed to this point. Do not use an over-lock machine for this step.

2. 

   A good iron makes zipper installation easier.

   Press the seam open all the way up, ironing the same amount of fabric in the zipper area. Press the zipper fabric flat for easier installation. Pin the zipper to the seam edge on the left side.

3. 

   Use a sewing machine equipped with a zipper foot to stitch the zipper in.

   Place the zipper foot on the sewing machine. Start sewing the zipper from the top down. Sew past the point where the seam is opened for the zipper. Zip the zipper closed and pin the second side of the zipper to the opposite seam. Starting at the bottom of the zipper sew up the zipper. Gently pull the zipper out of the way to stitch past it.
