How to Make an RJ45 Connection to a CAT5 Cable

How to Make an RJ45 Connection to a CAT5 Cable thumbnail
Cat-5 cables connect your computer to a network.

Cat-5, or Category 5, cables are used for local area network connections and Internet connections. It has been superseded by Cat-5e and Cat-6 cables, but is still widely in use. A Cat-5 cable has eight wires inside that are twisted into pairs. The wires are colored white/green, green, white/orange, blue, white/blue, orange, white/brown, and brown. The cable terminates with an RJ45 plug. Learning how to connect a Cat-5 cable to an RJ45 plug is easy and will save you money.

Instructions

    • 1

Strip off about three-fourths of an inch of the outer cover at both ends of the Cat-5 cable using the cable stripper in the crimping tool. This will reveal the four pairs of twisted wires inside.

    • 2

Untwist and straighten the wires and arrange them from left to right in the following order: white/green, green, white/orange, blue, white/blue, orange, white/brown, brown. Using diagonal pliers, trim off about half an inch from the tip of the wires so that they will all come out with the same length.

    • 3

Insert the wires into the cavity at the back of the RJ45 connector while making sure that the arrangement of the wires mentioned in the preceding step is not disturbed, and that each wire is properly seated into its corresponding channel. Push the wires all the way to the end of the cavity to ensure that the pins inside the RJ45 will pierce the individual wires and make good contact.

    • 4

Insert the RJ45 into the crimping hole of the crimping tool and strongly press the levers together to crimp the cable into the RJ45 plug. Repeat the same procedure at the other end of the Cat-5 cable.
