How to Install Printer Memory

When you use your printer to print documents, pictures and such from your desktop or laptop computer, what you are printing gets compressed and sent to the built-in memory your printer has. Large documents and complicated pictures tend to take up more of your memory and fill up the printer's buffer, so it takes longer for your stuff to print. Adding more memory can help solve this problem, making your printer faster and more productive.

Things You'll Need

  • Single in-line memory module (SIMM)
  • Screwdriver set

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug your printer from the power supply and unhook your printer from your computer.

    • 2

Locate and unscrew the screws that hold the case in place.

    • 3

Locate the socket panel for the memory module; remove the screw(s) and panel. Consult your manufacturer's specific service manual for the exact location.

    • 4

Line up the SIMM with the socket and push into place. Many SIMM cards have 72 pins with the first and last gold pins. The first pin goes on the left and the last pin is lined up on the right, corresponding to the same numbers labeled on the socket.

    • 5

Replace the socket panel and printer case. Don't over-tighten the screws.

    • 6

Reattach your printer to your computer and plug your printer back in. Print a large file that would usually take a long time to finish; your printer should now be faster.
