How to Check a Title

How to Check a Title thumbnail
Titles are kept on public record.

A title of the house gives information on the owner of the property and a description of the property. It also describes the type of ownership attached to the house, such as a quitclaim or a joint tenancy. The type of ownership listed on the title can affect your family if you pass away, so it is a good idea to check your title and make sure you have the appropriate form of ownership listed on it.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit your local registry of deeds office for the county where the property is located. The title is a matter of public record and is kept there.

    • 2

Ask the clerk for the deed for your home. You can ask for it by address or by your name if you are the owner.

    • 3

Read the body of the title to check the details. Make sure it describes the correct property and outlines the correct form of ownership. Return the title to the clerk when you're done with it.

    • 4

Visit a document locator website (such as the one listed in Resource) if you cannot visit the registry office. These websites allow you to view public documents without having to visit the courthouse.
