How to Reuse an Overheated Hard Drive After a Crash

Overheating a hard drive following a major system crash does not necessarily mean the end of the useful life of the drive. Reuse your potentially damaged drive by first checking for errors on the drive and repairing them using the tools in your operating system. This enables you to once again store important files and documents on the drive without fear.

Instructions

    • 1

      Click "Start" and "Programs."

    • 2

      Click "Accessories" and "Command Prompt."

    • 3

Type "chkdsk x: /r" and press "Enter," replacing "x" with the letter of the crashed drive.

    • 4

Press "Y" to confirm and restart the computer. Your drive will be scanned for problems and repaired as the computer boots.
