Per-text charges can be avoided with text blocking.

Text messaging on Verizon Wireless cell phones can be blocked using the text messaging control panel offered by the carrier. Blocking text messages on Verizon phones can help you avoid per-text charges, which apply if you do not have a texting plan on your account. Per the Verizon Wireless support page, as of August 2010, individual domestic text messages cost 20 cents to send or receive. If another cellular user begins sending unsolicited text messages or chain messages to your account, the per-text charges can add up quickly.
