How to Study for a Biology CLEP Test

How to Study for a Biology CLEP Test thumbnail
Passing a biology CLEP test earns you six hours of college science credit.

The College Board offers a biology CLEP test that allows students to receive six hours of college credit. Taking practice tests, reviewing study guides and reviewing knowledge in specific topic areas are all good strategies to prepare for a biology CLEP. The specific subject areas the test covers are listed on The College Board website. The biology CLEP test covers equal portions of molecular, organismal and population biology.

Instructions

    • 1

Study organismal biology. For this portion of the biology CLEP, you will need to understand reproduction and photosynthesis. The test will cover reproduction for both animals and plants, so studying both is key to doing well. Another portion of organismal biology that will appear on the test is genetics. Know principles of heredity and how offspring inherit their traits.

    • 2

Study molecular biology and smaller parts of organisms. Another third of the biology test covers microbiology. Understanding how organelles function inside of cells, how cells reproduce, simple chemical reactions and sickness in cells is key to having a broad scope of knowledge to prepare for the test.

    • 3

Study ecological science. The biology CLEP test is partially made up of ecological questions. Knowing biological ecosystems and their relationship with inhabitants will prepare you for this portion of the test. Understanding the theory of evolution, animal behaviors within their ecosystem and social biology is an important part in preparing for this segment of the test.

Use CLEP-specific study guides. The College Board publishes an official CLEP study guide that offers one practice test in each subject area. If you do not wish to purchase a study guide, local libraries often carry a copy. Several Internet sites also publish specific study guides for the CLEP biology test. The college board also releases recommended textbooks and free Internet resources to study for the biology CLEP.

Take a practice test. The College Board offers practice questions with an answer key and a practice test that test takers can purchase. Books specifically made for the biology CLEP test usually contain a practice test. Other websites for CLEP practice questions may have a biology test.
