How do I Tell the Difference Between an Original Designer Handbag From a Knock-Off?

Closely inspecting the handbag is the best way to see if its a knock-off.

The designer knock-off business is booming in America. Americans are the second largest purchaser of knock-off goods in the world. Knock-offs are offered at various price points and quality, so do not assume just because something is real leather and over $200 that it is authentic. It is not always possible to tell a fake from the real thing, but there are tell tale signs to look for.

1. Check the stitching. The first place knock-off creators fumble is the stitching. Usually it will be of poor quality, or inconsistent with the original manufacturer's color or location. Look at all stitches for bad workmanship.

2. Examine the label. Counterfeit purses often have misspelled words or inconsistent placement of the labels. If you have time, study the correct labels for the bags you are interested in to better compare the two.

3. Check the small details. A typical designer handbag will have logos printed in places such as the rivets or zipper pulls and knock-off manufacturers often overlook the small details.

4. Feel the material. Although the fabric may be genuine leather, it will certainly not be from the same leather mill in Italy and you should be able to tell the difference. Many knock-offs feel still to the touch.

5. Examine the packaging. Luxury retailers offer their customers a buying experience in addition to their high quality goods. If buying a used handbag, ask to see the original packaging. This should include boxes, a soft bag to keep dust from the handbag and tissue paper, often with the brand logo.

6. Look for the appropriate paper trail. Most designer bags come with a certificate of authenticity and other booklets about the brand. The person selling the bag should also have an original receipt.
