How Do I Roast Green Coffee Beans in an Iron Skillet?
If you're a true coffee connoisseur who wants to create the perfect cup from start to finish, or whether you're just curious about the process by which coffee beans create that steaming cup in the nearby cafe, you may wish to roast your own coffee beans at some point. Roasting beans perfectly takes a lot of practice but you can get started with just an iron skillet on your home stovetop. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Iron skillet with a lid
- Oven thermometer
- 8 to 12 oz. green coffee beans
- Metal colander
- Wooden spoon

1
Place your iron skillet on your stove, put the probe of the oven-safe thermometer inside, place the lid on top and turn the flame to low. Remove the lid and check the thermometer periodically until it reaches 500 to 550 degrees Fahrenheit, then turn the flame down slightly to maintain this temperature. Remove the thermometer from the skillet.

2
Pour your coffee beans into the skillet and replace the lid.

3
Shake the skillet vigorously while keeping it near the flame to maintain the temperature. After 4 to 7 you should hear the beans begin to crack and smell a hint of smoke. Remove the lid to check the color of the beans.
-
4
Replace the lid on the skillet and begin shaking it again. Check the color of the beans every minute until they are slightly lighter than your desired final color.
-
5
Pour the beans into your metal colander and stir constantly with the wooden spoon until the beans are only warm to the touch rather than hot.

Tips & Warnings
Open any nearby windows before roasting your coffee to avoid ending up with a kitchen full of smoke.
Consider stirring the coffee beans in the colander outside rather than inside, as a significant amount of chaff may fly off during this process.
You will probably not obtain a perfectly even roast using this method, especially the first few times you try it. If an even roast is important to you, consider using a different method to roast your coffee beans at home.
