1
Talk to the staff at your tanning salon about which bed you should use and how long you should tan for. If you are very pale or have never tanned indoors before, they will recommend somewhere around seven minutes for your first time. When you have tanned a few times and built a base tan, you can go in the bed for longer. If you start off with too much time, you will burn and not tan.

2
Use a lotion, preferably one formulated for indoor tanning. This helps you develop and maintain your tan. Ideally, you should buy lotions for both your face and body. If you don't want to buy a special lotion, you should at least use sunblock in the bed so you don't burn. Apply it evenly all over your face and body, a few hours before you get into the bed, and don't forget that you'll be naked in there, so you need it everywhere.

Take off your clothes and put up your hair. Put on the eye protection provided for you. Get in the bed when it goes on. Lay flat on your back and turn the fans on the highest speed. If your bed has a facial option, turn it on only for a little, and gradually increase the time as you tan more. Spread your legs and move your arms away from your body. Lay still and close your eyes.

Every now and then, tan your underarms by lifting your arms to allow the rays to access your armpits. By tanning your underarms, you create a tan that looks more real. Some people find that the way their backs and buttocks press against the bed creates an area on their lower back that stays pale. To avoid this, every now and then raise yourself off the bed for a bit, so that your lower back is a few inches off the bed. Make sure you raise your chin so your neck gets tan as well.

5
Moisturize excessively after using the bed and don't shower immediately. This allows your tan to develop. If you are itchy at all, take an oatmeal bath. Blend 1 cup of oats until they are a fine powder. Mix this powder into a warm bath and soak for 20 minutes. This should get rid of any itchiness caused by your indoor tanning sunburn.

6
Tan once or twice a week to maintain your tan. It is against the law to tan everyday, not to mention highly damaging to your skin. If you do not tan for a few weeks, you will lose the tan you have built, as your skin's epidermal layer renews itself.
