How to Unlock Samsung Phones: Codes

By Joanne Cichetti

When a cell phone comes locked to a particular GSM network, you have to unlock it if you ever want to use the phone with a carrier other than the one from which you purchased it. You can unlock phones using special unlocking software connected with the phone using a cable, but this method is slightly complicated. A better option involves "remote unlocking" your phone by paying a company to generate an unlock code for your particular handset. When you enter this code into the phone, you unlock your phone.

Navigate to the website Hyfeno (see link in Resources section) and see whether your cell phone is included in the list of phones with free unlock codes. Scroll down the list, find your Samsung model, and note its unlock code. If you find your phone here, skip to Step 3.

If you don't find your phone listed on the website, see Step 2.

Purchase the unlock code from a pay site such as Unlocking, GSM liberty or Unlock All Cellular. Depending on your Samsung phone model, the code should cost you between $10 and $50, as of 2010. You will have to provide these websites with the phone's IMEI number, determined by typing "*#06#." After the website emails you the code, proceed to Step 3.

Power on the phone using a SIM card from a network provider currently not accepted by the phone, also known as an unaccepted SIM card.

Enter the unlock code obtained from the website when the Samsung phone prompts you for a password. If the phone doesn't ask for a password, type "#0111*CODE#." Your phone will unlock after it verifies the code.
