How to Locate LMHOST

How to Locate LMHOST thumbnail
Locate your LMHOST file to view its content.

The LMHOST file is an internal Windows system file used to map IP addresses to friendly NetBIOS names. NetBIOS names are used with older Windows operating systems such as Windows 98, 95 and NT. The system file is still available in the newer Windows operating systems for backwards compatibility with these older Windows computers. You will find the LMHOST file in a specific system directory on your computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Windows "Start" button. Enter "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc" into the text box. Press "Enter" to open a Windows Explorer screen that lists all the files saved in this directory.

    • 2

Right-click the LMHOST file in this directory and select "Open With." Select "Notepad" to open the file in your text editor.

    • 3

View the content of the LMHOST file. If you have any older Windows machines on the network, the machine's NetBIOS name and IP address are listed in this file content.
