Convert your distorted 8mm film to DVD.

Cheap and easy to use, 8mm film was a popular home-video format until video became affordable and took over the market. Though 8mm was easy to use, much of the equipment was low in quality, often leading to choppy, distorted movies. Though nothing can fix a distorted 8mm image, you can transfer such films to DVD just as you would clear images.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Set up an 8mm-film projector and projection screen, then load the 8mm film.

    • 2

Turn on the projector and align the image with the projection screen.

    • 3

Setup your tripod beside the projector and mount your video camera upon it.

    • 4

Turn off the auto-focus on your camera, if it has it.

    • 5

Align the frame within the viewfinder with the projected image.

    • 6

Press the record button on the camera, then start the film projector. Let the 8mm film play through completely, then shut off the projector and video camera. Before moving on, rewind the video camera and be certain the recording meets your specifications.

    • 7

Connect the camera to your computer with a Firewire cable and turn both on.

    • 8

Open your video-editing software. Your camera may have come with baseline video-editing software, which should suffice for a simple transfer like this, but here are other options if it did not or your would prefer to use something else (see Resources).

    • 9

Click "File" and open then "Import" to open the import window.

    • 10

Select your camera from the list of devices and click transfer to begin the transfer of the video onto your hard drive.

    • 11

Click and drag the transferred video file onto the "Timeline." If there are multiple clips you wish to put onto the DVD, place them in the order, from left to right, that you wish them to play.

    • 12

Place a recordable DVD into the computer and export the 8mm films to DVD.
