How to Upgrade a DV4000 CPU
Your HP Pavilion dv4000's CPU is the main chip on your motherboard that runs your computer's software. Upgrading the CPU will greatly improve your computer's overall performance. The speed of your CPU chip directly affects how fast your computer runs programs and performs essential functions. Upgrading the CPU usually requires that you completely disassemble your laptop. However, in the case of the dv4000, there is nearly no disassembly required.

Shut down your laptop. Disconnect the AC power cable from its socket. Disconnect any external devices from the computer. Close the LCD screen and place the laptop face down on a flat surface.

Rotate the computer so the front is facing forward. Locate the battery near the top of the laptop's bottom casing. Press on the battery release buttons. Remove the battery from the computer.

Locate the heat sink and processor compartment in the upper right corner of the laptop. Remove the single Phillips-head screw securing the compartment cover in place. Remove the cover from the laptop.

Remove the four Phillips-head screws securing the heat sink inside the compartment. Lift the heat sink out of the laptop and set it aside.

Turn the CPU's flat-head locking screw in the counterclockwise direction one-half turn until you hear a faint click sound. This means the CPU is released from its socket. Grasp the edges of the CPU, and then lift it out of its compartment.

Reverse this procedure to install your new CPU chip.
