How to Change Auto Input Keys in Open Office

How to Change Auto Input Keys in Open Office thumbnail
There are ways to tweak how Open Office responds to keyboard input.

OpenOffice.org is a suite of office software similar to Microsoft Office. There are several separate modules, including Calc, a spreadsheet program like Microsoft Excel, and Writer, a word processor like Microsoft Word. These programs have time-saving customization options to control the way you input information using the keyboard, including variations of automatic input that you can either activate or deactivate according to your personal work style.

Instructions

  1. Turn Off AutoInput in Calc

    • 1

Open a spreadsheet document in OpenOffice.org Calc.

    • 2

Select "Cell Contents" from the Tools menu.

    • 3

Insert or clear the check mark in the small box next to "AutoInput" in the menu that pops out to the side. The check mark turns "AutoInput" on and the lack of a check mark turns it off. AutoInput is a feature that automatically finishes text in a cell based on other entries. For example, if you are making an address list, once you've typed the name of a certain city once, it will attempt to finish it the same way when you type a word in another cell that starts with the same letters.

    Customize AutoCorrect Options in Writer

    • 4

Open a document in OpenOffice.org Writer.

    • 5

Select "AutoCorrect Options" from the Tools menu. A multi-tab dialog box will appear in which you can make many changes.

    • 6

Set "Replace" options. In the "Replace" tab, you can set any string of characters to be automatically replaced by another string of characters. For example, if you often find yourself mistyping "abut" instead of "about," you could set it to automatically replace the misspelled word. You can also select any entry already on the list and click on the "Delete" button to delete it.

    • 7

Set Options. In the "Options" tab, there is a list of many options you can select or deselect by inputting or clearing an "x" in the box next to each option.

    • 8

Set the "Word Completion" options. In the "Word Completion" tab, you can click to input or clear the "x" in the box next to "Enable word completion." You can instruct it to "collect words," remembering words you use commonly and adding them to the list. You can choose from a short drop-down list of keys to use to "accept" the word it attempts to automatically complete. You can delete a word from the list of words it has gathered or add a new one.

    Customize Keyboard Shortcuts

    • 9

Select "Customize" from the Tools menu in any OpenOffice.org program. A multi-tab dialog box will appear. Select the "Keyboard" tab to customize the keyboard shortcuts.

    • 10

Select either "OpenOffice.org" or the name of the individual program by clicking one of the radio buttons next to these terms. This is where you determine whether your customization applies just to the individual program or to all of the OpenOffice.org programs.

    • 11

Select an entry in the "Shortcut Keys" list and then select the command you want that key to perform from the "Function" list.

    • 12

Click on the "Modify" button to assign the combination of key and command selected.
