A Media Access Control address, commonly known as a MAC address, is a 48- or 64-bit address linked to a network adapter. MAC addresses are similar to IP addresses, however, a MAC addresses is associated with hardware of network adapters instead of software. Generally, MAC addresses are permanent and will always stay assigned to a piece of hardware. If you are curious about the MAC addresses associated with an IP address on your computer, you may use the command prompt to discover the information.

      Click "Start" and select "Run."

      Type "cmd" into the box. Click on the "OK" button. The command prompt window will display.

      Type "arp" into the command prompt window then press the "Enter" key. A list of commands associated with arp will display.

      Type "arp - a" into the command prompt window. Press the "Enter" key. This will cause a list of MAC addresses to display with associated IP addresses. Scroll down the list and find the IP addresses associated with the MAC address. An example of a MAC addresses associated with an IP address is as follows:

      157.55.85.212 00-aa-00-62-c6-09

      The first number listed, "157.55.82.212" is the IP address. The second number, "00-aa-00-62-c6-09" is the MAC address.
