Which level of soccer play will be the best fit? You have to know your child and your family to answer that question. Here are some tips on making the choice.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Do your homework. Speak to players and parents from your prospective team or soccer organization.

  2. Step 2

Read all available literature the team puts out so you understand the details of your commitment.

  3. Step 3

Attend one of the desired team's practices or games.

  4. Step 4

Request a meeting or conversation with the coach.

  5. Step 5

Ask if your child can participate as a guest player for the team, if it is allowed, so you can get the best feel for the team.

  6. Step 6

Practice with the team, if playing is not possible.

  7. Step 7

Try out only if you are serious about joining. Do not try out just to see if your child can succeed. This is unfair to the team and to players who might have been chosen instead.

Tips & Warnings
  • Explore what your child wants. Discuss his or her goals, keeping in mind that choosing a level depends on your child's desire and willingness to commit.
  • Consider the entire family. Your choice should be a blend of both your child's and your family's needs. Play at a higher level can mean a major commitment on everyone's part.
  • Consider siblings. Transportation, spectating, and lending support are often part of higher levels of play, and siblings may get less attention or time.
