How do I Find Robot Kits?

How do I Find Robot Kits? thumbnail
Robots are much more complex than simple toys.

The future of highly artificially intelligent bipedal robots may still be far off, but robot building is a very real hobby. Hardcore enthusiasts build robots from scratch, often entering them in competitions. Less skilled hobbyists can still enjoy this pastime by purchasing one of several robot kits. These are available in all shapes and sizes, and prices can vary wildly. A simple kit may cost as little as $20, and more complicated sets can cost thousands. There are several websites online that can help you find a robot kit that's appropriate for your skill level.

Instructions

Assess your skill level. It is important that you seriously consider what you are capable of building. If you are a beginner, stick with a basic model. If you have built several robots, consider something more advanced. Most robot kit websites are organized according to difficulty.

Tips & Warnings

  • Although most tech stores do not sell robot kits, they are great places to go to find individual parts.

  • Joining a robot club is also a great way to improve your skill level.

  • To be considered a robot, your construction must move, be made of metal, and able to make decisions.

  • Do not attempt to build something above your skill level without help, it will likely be an expensive failure.
