How to Enable a Wake up on LAN thumbnail
Enable Wake on LAN easily through your computer's boot options.

Wake on LAN is a computer process that sends a data packet through a local area network (LAN) that powers up a PC on the network. The Wake on LAN process is available on most modern computers, but must be enabled before use. Wake on LAN is enabled through the computer's boot menu available during startup. The settings changed to enable Wake on LAN are easily disabled if the need arises to cut off Wake on LAN capability from your computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Restart your PC. Enter the boot menu as the computer boots by pressing the correct F key. Typically, the key to press is "F12" or "F8," depending on your system. The correct F key is displayed on the lower-right side of the black screen for a few seconds as the computer boots. If you see the Windows logo, too much time has passed and you need to try again.

    • 2

Highlight the "Advanced Power Management" option and press "Enter." Highlight and enable the "Power on by PCI Devices" or "Resume by MAC LAN" option. The names of these options vary depending on the make of your computer.

    • 3

Press "OK" to exit the Setup menu. Allow your computer to finish booting. Wake on LAN is now enabled for that PC.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want to revert the changes made to your boot options, simply restart your computer, enter the Setup menu, and change the settings back to their defaults.
