Dispose of gasoline for safety and health.

If you have a junkyard where you store old cars, or you have old cars that still have gasoline in the tank, it's wise to dispose of the gas. Gasoline contains chemicals that can contaminate the soil and water if released into the ground. Gas can also ignite, so proper disposal can avoid a fire.

Depending on how old the gas is, you have a couple of options for getting the fuel out of old cars and disposing of it.

Confirm whether the gas is good or deteriorated. If you know how old the gas is, you can use good gas again. If the gas is deteriorated or you do not know how old the gas is, it's best to make disposal arrangements. According to AOL Auto, if the gas is older than a couple of months, you should consider it deteriorated.

Siphon good gas into a gas container. If the gas is good, you can use a siphon to funnel the gas from the gas tank of the old car into a gas can or other storage container. You can store the gas in the container until you are ready to use it again. Then you can pour the gas into another car, lawn mower or other gas-operated machine.

Identify hazardous waste disposal centers. Look in the yellow pages of your local phone book under headings such as "Environmental and Ecological Services" and "Oils, Waste." Call some of the services listed to ask whether they dispose of gasoline.

    • 4

Transport gas to the disposal center. Siphon the old gas out of the car and into a gas can that you can use to take the gas to the disposal center. Take the old gas to the disposal center for proper disposal.

    • 5

Pay the disposal fee. Some hazardous waste disposal centers dispose of old gas for free, but a fee may be charged. If there is a fee, you need to make the payment before handing over the gas for proper disposal.
