How Do I Fix Computer Security Problems for Free?
With so many people using the Internet for sensitive purposes such as finances or commerce, ensuring your computer's security has never been more important. However, protecting your computer does not have to be an expensive undertaking. There are plenty of free options available when it comes to security software, as well as simple habits you can adopt to help defend your personal files. A few good programs and a bit of common sense can go a long way in keeping your computer safe.

1
Download security software. Every computer should have the triple threat of antivirus software, a malware/adware scanner and a firewall. Your computer may have come with this sort of software pre-installed. Some users prefer to use third-party programs instead, and luckily, many are available for free (see the Resource links below for examples).
Those particularly concerned for their Internet security may wish to connect to an anonymous network, such as Tor, or subscribe to a free anonymous proxy service. Additionally, most popular browser software has add-ons available to block unwanted cookies or Javascript files.

2
Scan your computer regularly. Even if you don't download files often, adware and tracking cookies can easily sneak in during normal computer usage. It is recommended that you scan your computer for viruses and malware at least once a week.
If a virus is found, the software will take steps to quarantine the file and delete it from your system. Some legitimate files can give false alarms, so be careful when deleting files. It is always best to do an online search for the file name before you erase it from your computer.

Practice good Internet habits. Don't download from untrusted sources or open email attachments from unknown senders. Refrain from doing online banking or making online purchases when using public WiFi. Check regularly for updates to your security programs to make sure you are protected against the most recent viruses.

4
Keep passwords private. Use common sense when sharing your password with others. Never allow your browser to save passwords on a shared computer.
