Companies operating in most areas of the European Union (EU) are required to have a VAT or value-added tax registration number. If your company regularly buys or sells from companies based in the EU, it is best to validate your partners’ VAT registrations before conducting business.
Registration data for companies in member countries is available through the VAT Information Exchange System (VIES), which was created by the European Commission's Taxation and Customs Union. Each member country has its own structure for VAT and most countries provide the name and address of the registered company in addition to the VAT registration number.
Pull up the VAT registration web form at Europa VIES. This site not only validates the registration number, but also provides you with registration information regarding the company of inquiry. See Resources for the link.
Use the drop-down menu to select the company's home country.
Input the VAT registration number for the company. If you do not know the registration number, look on your most recent receipt or call the company directly.
Click "Verify". If the company is VAT registered, the verification screen will display its registration information.
