How to Grease Button Head Grease Fittings

How to Grease Button Head Grease Fittings thumbnail
Button head grease fittings allow grease servicing in high volume applications.

Standard grease fittings, also called grease zerks, allow only a small amount of grease to pass through at a time. In most applications, this is ideal. Bearing cavities typically require only a small amount of lubricant for proper lubrication. For times when a higher volume of grease is necessary, button head grease fittings are used. Applications include large mower decks and brush cutters. Button head fittings require a specific coupler on the grease gun for applying lubricant. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the standard grease coupler from the end of the grease gun hose using two crescent wrenches--one as a backup--to break the fitting loose from the hose-end threaded nipple. Unscrew the coupler and save it for later.

    • 2

Screw the button head coupler onto the grease gun and tighten it with the two crescents. There is no need to over-tighten it, just snug it up tight.

    • 3

Spray a light coat of aerosol lubricant onto a shop rag. Use the rag to wipe the button head grease fittings of dirt or grime. Buildup on the fitting will not only prevent the coupler from fitting properly, but some will enter the bearing cavity during service--causing contamination issues later.

    • 4

Slide the grease coupler onto the fitting from the side. A notch at the tip of the button head grease coupler will hold the coupler securely on the fitting while servicing.

    • 5

Pump the grease gun handle to apply grease through the fitting, and into the bearing or cavity as needed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep button head fittings covered with a plastic cap to keep them clean and free of contamination.

  • Do not hold the grease fitting coupler by hand while greasing--the grease gun exerts a high pressure.
