Kimber 1911 pistols are high-end handguns and are favorites with competition shooters and law enforcement officers alike. Kimber target models come standard with adjustable sights, however models equipped with fixed sights can be fitted with adjustable sights. 1911 pistols utilized open sights requiring the shooter to center the front side on the target and align the front sight with the notch in the rear sight. The drawback of fixed sights is at the shooter must determine the bullet’s point-of-impact in relation to the point-of-aim. Adjustable sights allow the shooter to move the point-of-aim to coincide with the bullet’s point of impact.

Items you will need

  • Small flat-head screwdriver

  • Ammunition

  • Target

  • Masking tape

Step 1

Set up a target at approximately 25 yards.

Step 2

Aim your pistol at the center of the target and fire at least three controlled shots. Check your target and mark the center of your shot group with a piece of tape. Determine the necessary corrections to “move” the shot group to the center of the target. For example, if the shot group is low and to the left, than your sight must be adjusted up and to the right.

Step 3

Find the adjustment screw--located on top of the rear sight--and use a small flat-head screwdriver to turn the screw counter-clockwise to bring the point-of-aim up or clockwise to bring it down. Turn the adjustment screw--on the right side of the rear sight--clockwise to move the point-of-aim right or counter-clockwise to bring it left. Make the adjustments as you see fit.

Step 4

Repeat the process--thereby, fine tuning the sight picture--until you’re satisfied with the accuracy of the sights.

Warnings

  • Excercise caution when adjusting the sights of your Kimber 1911. Follow the rules of safe gun handling and use appropriate safety equipment (shooting classes and hearing protection).
  • Never make adjustments on a loaded weapon. Always unload the pistol before making adjustments on the sights.
