Finding your holy grail mascara can be years-long challenge. And even once you do, putting it on and taking it off every single day is not exactly fun. Want a more long-term solution? Eyelash extensions might be for you. They can last for four to six weeks, but there is a certain eye-makeup routine for extending the life of your faux fringe. Eyelash extensions are synthetic fibers that are glued to your natural eyelashes one by one with surgical glue. An aesthetician may glue as many as 120 individual lashes to each lash line; the process can take as long as one to three hours. Once your extensions are set, you can apply makeup to enhance your gorgeous new lashes even more. Eyeliner can amp up your look, but you might need to replace the liner you already have.

Liquid, cream, and pencil liners are risky with eyelash extensions.

Oil-based liquid eyeliners are not recommended, because oil can weigh down the lashes and result in premature loss of the extensions. Cream liners may leave a residue on your faux lashes. Pencil liners, when applied, drag along the lash line, which can result in pulling, tugging, and tangling. Powder eyeliner works best with eyelash extensions. Make sure you opt for an oil-free formulation.

Tips

Less is more

when it comes to applying eyeliner with eyelash extensions. More liner means more potential buildup on your lashes, go easier on the eye makeup than you normally would. Just let those stunning lashes have their moment. Once you've chosen an oil-free powder eyeliner, gently apply it to your lash line. Dip a thin, angled brush into the powder, and tap off any excess. Very gently dab the brush along your upper and lower lash lines to apply the liner.

Minimize contact with the extensions

because any roughness can pull them off.

Remove your powder eyeliner daily to avoid any buildup

on your lashes. Wet a cotton ball with oil-free eye makeup remover, or use a cotton swab for more precision. Apply the remover side to side along your lash line to erase the eyeliner. Then brush upward, away from the lashes, to clean your lids. Never wipe the cotton ball or swab downward toward your eyelash extensions, which can cause them to fall off.
