How to Turn the Computer Fan Off

As they operate, computer components generate heat which can interfere with device function. Many computer cases contain case fans to create airflow to move hot air away from vital devices like the central processing unit (CPU) and random access memory (RAM.). Most computers also have a large fan attached to the CPU to dispel heat and keep the CPU running. In some cases, internal fans may cause noise or electrical problems. Disabling a fan can help you troubleshoot the cause of noises and power issues.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the computer off and unplug all external cords.

    • 2

Use a screwdriver to open the computer's case. Standard cases can be opened by removing a few screws along the right side of the back of the case and sliding the side panel away from the computer.

    • 3

Locate the fan that you wish to turn off. Computer cases can have several internal fans on the front, back, top or sides of the case as well as mounted on top of the CPU.

    • 4

Locate the power cord connecting the fan to the power supply (the metal box in the upper back corner of the computer with a bundle of cables coming out of it) and disconnect the power cord. CPU fans typically have a small cord that plugs directly into the motherboard itself. Unplugging this small cord will disable the CPU fan. Do not turn off the CPU fan unless you are an advanced user.

    • 5

Close your computer's case, plug the cables back in and turn the computer on. The disconnected fan will be turned off until power is reconnected.

Tips & Warnings

  • Disabling computer fans may reduce airflow in the case and lead to overheating.

  • Disabling the CPU fan may cause a computer to fail to start up.

  • Replacing or cleaning old fans can help a computer run quieter.

  • If a computer runs without a working CPU fan, the CPU can overheat which may cause the computer to crash. It may also cause permanent damage to the computer.
