How do I Print on Melamine Dinner Plates?

How do I Print on Melamine Dinner Plates? thumbnail
Use a hard-bristled stencil brush or paintbrush to print on a melamine plate

Print on melamine dinner plates using either enamel paint or paint specifically for painting on glass. Both paints are available for purchase at local hobby and craft stores. Use a stencil, hand painting or stamps to print on melamine. A stencil or stamp creates a hard, sharp line to printed edges. Purchase ready-made stencils or use homemade cut stencils. The easiest paint to use is glass paint. Clean-up is with water. Glass paint requires baking to harden the paint. Do not put a melamine plate in the oven. Place the plate in direct sun to harden the paint.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour rubbing alcohol onto a cotton ball. Wipe the cotton ball over the surface of the melamine plate to remove any oil and dirt.

    • 2

Align the stencil on the surface of the melamine plate in the desired location.

    • 3

Squeeze a dime size drop of acrylic glass paint on the surface of a paper plate. Dab the stencil brush into the paint at a 90-degree angle.

    • 4

Pounce, which is bouncing the stencil brush straight up and down, the stencil brush on the paper plate to remove excess paint from the stencil brush. The stencil brush requires the bristles to be almost dry to prevent the paint from spreading under the stencil outline. Practice will produce the correct amount of paint on the bristles.

    • 5

Apply the paint from the outside edge of the stencil to the center. Pounce the stencil brush up and down. Follow the entire edge then work towards the center. Apply more paint to the stencil brush as needed.

    • 6

Remove the stencil. Clean the stencil brush and stencil with water.

    • 7

Wrap plastic wrap around the plate making sure not to touch the stenciled design.

    • 8

Place the plastic wrapped plate in direct sunlight for eight hours to dry.
