Almost everyone sets a desktop background on his computer, but did you know that you can even set a background on a flash drive? If you're all about customization, then you can set a picture as a background on your flash drive so that even your flash drive window will feature the background of your choice rather than a plain, boring one. The process to set a picture as a background on a flash drive requires basic computer skills and a bit of coding.

      Plug your flash drive into your computer's USB port. Click the "Start" button. Click "My Computer." Double-click on your flash drive, which is listed as a removable storage drive, to open it.

      Click "File." Scroll to "New." Click "Folder." Type "Background" into the folder text box and then press "Enter" to name it.

      Drag and drop the picture that you want to set as a background on the flash drive to the "Background" folder that you just created.

      Right-click anywhere in the flash drive, but not in the folder you just created. Scroll to "New." Click "Text Document."

      Right-click on the text document you just created. Scroll to "Open With" and select "Notepad." Copy and paste the following into the notepad document:

      IconArea_Image=background\your image name here.jpg

      IconArea_Text=0xFFFFFF

      Input the name of your picture where it says "your image name here.jpg."

      Click "File" and then "Save As." Input "desktop.ini" into "File Name" text box and select "All Files" from the "File Type" drop-down menu. Click the "Save" button. Delete the unnamed text document to clean up your flash drive. You now have the picture set as a background on the flash drive.

Tips & Warnings

  • Hide the background folder by right-clicking on it, clicking "Properties" and checking the "Hidden" check box. That way your flash drive shows only the folders you want to be modifiable.

  • The text document file must be named "desktop.ini" for the code to work.
