How do I Play in a Pre-Qualifying Event for a PGA Tour Golf Tournament? thumbnail
Local qualifying tournaments are held at locations all over the United States.

To play in some PGA tour events players must first pass through a pre-qualifying stage. For example, The U.S. Open is made up of 156 golfers each year. Of this field of 156, nearly half of the players have to play in a pre-qualifying event. The other half has gained exempt status. In the U.S. open, exempt status can be gained by winning the championship in the past 10-years or winning any other major in the past 5-years.

Instructions

Find out when and where the closest pre-qualifying tournament is for a specific PGA event. A list of tournaments that have PGA pre-qualifiers can be found on the USGA website.

Check to make sure that you have the required credentials for the pre-qualifying tournament that you want to play in. Things that qualify you to play in a tournament can be your handicap index and age. For example, to play in a pre-qualifying tournament for the U.S. Senior Open you must be 50-years old on or before July 29, 2010 and have a handicap index that is equal to or less than 3.4.

Fill out the application for the event that you would like to pre-qualify for and mail it in. Be sure to include your entry fee as all of these tournaments will have a charge associated with them. You will receive confirmation from the USGA stating that you are signed up for the pre-qualifying event of your choosing. Once you receive confirmation you are considered an amateur player who can participate in a PGA event if you get through qualifying.

Tips & Warnings

  • To play in a pre-qualifying tournament you will need a USGA handicap index so be sure to track and log it throughout the golf season.

  • If you play extremely poorly in a pre-qualifying event the USGA has the right to reject any future applications.
