Setting up an Intex Pool begins with level ground

The Intex 15-by-48 pool can provide years of family enjoyment as long as it is properly cared for. Before you can begin enjoying the pool and completing necessary day-to-day maintenance, you need to install it on level ground. Failure to complete this first--and most critical--step may result in damage to the pool.

Things You'll Need

  • Shovel
  • Metal rake
  • Line levels
  • Load of topsoil or sand

Instructions

    • 1

Mark out the flattest area of land on your property for installation of your Intex Pool. The area needs to be at least 18 feet to accommodate the pool's diameter.

    • 2

Measure the ground to check its level. Using either line levels or a 6-foot level placed on top of a 12-foot board, check the level of the ground. Determine the high points and the low points and measure the difference between these points.

    • 3

Remove the sod from the high points with a shovel. For example, if your measurements showed a difference of 5 inches between the high and low points, remove 5 inches of sod from the high points. It is much easier to lower the high points than it is to raise the low points.

    • 4

Recheck the area to check for level. After removing the sod, go through with your level and check to see in the surface is now level.

    • 5

Cover the area with soft soil that is free from rocks or sticks. Your Intex vinyl pool will last much longer if it is installed on soft ground. Rocks and sticks can poke holes in the liner so making certain that the ground is soft and free of debris is critical.

    • 6

Rake the entire area with a metal rake to remove any left-over rocks and debris and smooth the added soil.

    • 7

Check for level with your leveling tool one last time before installing the pool. Make any necessary adjustments.

Tips & Warnings

  • Intex does not recommend using sand as the base for their pools. They believe that sand can shift too easily and create a very uneven and potential dangerous surface.
