The simplest way to share a file with many people without wasting bandwidth is to create a BitTorrent. With a BitTorrent, several people can upload and download the file at the same time, making downloads faster and less draining on each user's bandwidth. It doesn't take much work or computer knowledge to create a BitTorrent. Once you've created your BitTorrent file, all you need to do to share it is upload it to a torrent sharing website and leave your torrent program running to seed it to other users.

      Place the programs you'd like to share in a folder. Give the folder a name that describes its contents. Right-click the folder and select "Archive" or "Compress" to create a .zip file.

      Open a BitTorrent client. If you don't have one, download a reputable BitTorrent program. There are several to choose from online (See Resources).

      Click "File" in the menu bar and select "Create New Torrent." Choose the file you want and click "OK."

      Choose a tracker to use and type that in the area provided. The tracker watching how many people are uploading or downloading a BitTorrent at any given moment. There are thousands of trackers you can use (See Resources).

      Save your BitTorrent file with a ".torrent" extension. Save the file to a place on your computer where you can easy access it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Only create BitTorrents for files you can legally distribute. Illegal BitTorrents can lead to fines and even jail time.
