Many people are proud and excited to be able to vote. Having the opportunity to help decide who will represent you in your local, state and national government is a privilege and an honor. There are a few steps you need to take, however, before you're able to vote. First, you should research each candidate thoroughly to ensure you're making an informed decision about who will represent you. Then, you need to register and find your voting precinct.

Learn about your state's registration and voting rules by contacting your local elections office. Visit the "State by State Info" page of DeclareYourself.com to find contact information for your local elections office and to read more about your state's policies. Requirements, regulations and deadlines for registering to vote vary by state and registering will help you find your local voting precinct.

Register to vote. A link to the online registration form is located in the Resource section, or you can contact your local elections office. Follow the state and local guidelines you found in Step 1.

Be prepared to receive the location of your local voting precinct in the mail, along with your voter registration card. Once you register to vote, information about where your local voting precinct is located will be sent to you.

Contact your local elections office if you no longer have the information that was sent to you in the mail with your voter registration card. If you supply your address, then the elections office can tell you your voting precinct. You can also utilize online resources like the "Polling Place Finder" on Vote411.org.
