How to Remove a TSR Boot Virus

How to Remove a TSR Boot Virus thumbnail
TSR boot viruses can be difficult to remove.

A TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) boot virus will continue running on your computer even after you terminate the program the virus is associated with. As a result, the only way to remove a TSR boot virus is by removing the various aspects of the virus and then rebooting your computer so that the removal will take effect. There are a variety of programs that can assist the process of removing such viruses.

Instructions

    • 1

Download anti-virus software to your computer. There are a large number of free anti-virus software programs available on the Internet. (See the links in Resources.) After the .exe file has been downloaded, open the file to begin the installation of the program. If asked to restart your computer to allow the installation to take effect, do so.

    • 2

Boot up your computer. Press "F8" to bring up a number of start-up options. Choose "Safe Mode" and press "Enter."

    • 3

Run the anti-virus program in Safe Mode. The program may take up to a half hour or hour to examine all of the various programs you have on your hard drive. The program will locate the files associated with the TSR boot virus. After the program completes its search, check the files it found and press "Remove."

Restart your computer in normal mode. The virus should be gone, but if it is not, make sure your anti-virus program has up-to-date virus definitions. To do so, click on the "Update" tab after opening the anti-virus program. Once updated, repeat the process to remove any other files associated with the TSR boot virus.
