The kitchen sink can be the central point of the kitchen. It is at least where the cook spends most of his or her time in the kitchen slicing and washing vegetables, washing pots and pans and cleaning hands. Sinks are no longer simply a bowl with a faucet. Developers have introduced new items and more choices to sinks in the past few years. Knowing what you want and what best fits your kitchen will help you make the right decision. Look for a sink that fits your kitchen. If you have a small kitchen, you should probably choose a single basin as a large sink will overpower it. If you have a large kitchen, however, you have the option of multiple basins. These larger sinks will cost more money, but offer more space for tasks.

Choose the type of mounting you would like for the sink. You have two options here: undermount and self-rimming sinks. Self-rimming sinks are easy to install, taking only an hour or so. The raised rim, however, catches crumbs and dirt that become difficult to dislodge and clean over time. Undermount sinks take twice the time to install, but offer a sleeker look.

Decide on how many accessories you want for the sink, and therefore how many holes it will need. Typically, sinks come with one to five holes for the faucet, soap dispenser and spray hoses. You can also order a specialized number of holes, which will cost you more money.

Choose a material for the sink that matches the feel of your kitchen or counter top. A popular choice is stainless steel, but manufacturers offer many choices including porcelain, cast iron, granite composite and quartz composite. Make sure you choose a quality, durable material and that you understand for what you are paying.
