How to Send and Receive a Fax Through DSL With Fax Software
Sending and receiving a fax used to require a dedicated machine on both sides, but, with the spread of email, it has become much easier to send a fax. Online fax services allow you to send a document to anybody, as long as the recipient has access to a computer with an Internet connection.

Register with a fax-to-email service. These services will give you a dedicated phone number that you can use as a fax line. When a new fax is received, the service will forward it to your email address as a PDF File. Services you can choose from include RingCentral, MyFax and PopFax. As of 2010, these services cost between $9.95 and $15.95 per month.

Receive faxes. Distribute the phone number that you are given by your service as your fax number. Whenever a fax is sent to you, you will receive an email with a PDF file attached to it. Double-click on the file, and it will open. This is the fax.

Send faxes. Insert the document that you wish to fax in a flatbed scanner. Create a JPEG file and save it to your desktop. Create a new email and attach the JPEG file by clicking on the "Attachments" button. Locate the document that you wish to send. Once the file is attached, in the "To" section of the e-mail, type in the fax number of the recipient followed by the e-mail address from your fax service. Click "Send" and the email will automatically be translated into a fax.
