Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a color wheel. These are available at your local paint store or home improvement center.

    • 2

Find the color of your house siding on the color wheel.

    • 3

Choose a shutter color on the color wheel that complements or blends with the siding color. For a bolder statement, choose a color on the opposite side of the color wheel to contrast with the siding color.

    • 4

Collect paint chips from a paint store or home improvement center in shades that complement or contrast with the siding.

    • 5

Narrow your color choices to three or four by holding paint chips next to the house siding. Also consider what color your roof is.

    • 6

Purchase small jars of sample paint in the colors you've chosen. If those aren't available, have the smallest amount of paint mixed in those colors.

    • 7

Cut out rectangles of cardboard. Paint the cardboard with the sample colors.

    • 8

Tape the painted cardboard beside the windows. Step away from the house to make the final color choice.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider the colors of neighboring houses, as well as the colors of foliage and flowering plants, when choosing a color for your shutters.

  • If your house is in a neighborhood that has a covenant, always get permission before changing the color of your shutters.
