How to Force an Upgrade on a Windows Vista Installation

Microsoft Windows Vista comes with two different types of installations. The first type, the clean installation, will completely wipe your computer clean of any files and settings and install a fresh copy of Windows Vista. The second type, the upgrade installation, will keep your files, settings and programs from you current version of Windows intact. Performing an upgrade installation, rather than a clean installation, saves a lot of time and work.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on your computer. Your current version of Microsoft Windows will load as normal. Insert your Windows Vista installation disk into the drive.

    • 2

Click "Install Now" on the installation page. Choose whether or not you want to "Get important updates for installation." Microsoft recommends you get these updates if you have an Internet connection.

    • 3

Type in your 25-character product activation key once prompted. Read over the license terms and conditions and accept them.

    • 4

Select an "Upgrade" installation. The installation will run and reboot your PC with Windows Vista. You will retain all programs, settings and files from your current computer.
