How to Increase My Speed in a 256 KBPS Connection
Internet connection speed matters a great deal even if you’re not downloading something in particular, but simply browsing the Internet. Windows reserves 20 percent of your 256 Kbps bandwidth for its own benefit, but you can edit the registry and utilize this bandwidth for yourself, thereby increasing the speed of your connection. Additionally, you can also play around with the TCP/IP settings of your computer to set a Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) value.
Instructions
-
Method 1
-
1
Go to the “Start” menu and click “Run.”
-
2
Type “gpedit.msc” in the text field. The Group Policy window will now pop open.
-
-
3
Click on “Administrative Templates” from the left column of the window.
-
4
Click on “Network” and select “QoS Packet Schedule.”
-
5
Click on “Limit Reservable Bandwidth.” Now the “Properties” window will pop open.
-
6
Click the “Enable” radio button. On the same window, specify “0%” as the “Bandwidth Limit” instead of “20%” (which is the default value).
-
7
Click “Apply” and then click “OK” to save the settings. After you reboot your computer, you will find the Internet connection’s speed improved.
Method 2
-
8
Open Windows Registry Editor by going to the “Start” menu and clicking “Run.” Type “regedit.exe” in the textbox and click “OK.”
-
9
Navigate to “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE” > “System” > “CurrentControlSet” > “Services” > “Tcpip” > “Parameters” > “Interfaces.”
-
10
Select the network interface you use for your Internet connection under “Interfaces.” On the opposite side under the “Interfaces”, you will see a couple of keys and values. One of these should be labeled “MTU.” Right-click the “MTU” value and click “Edit.”
-
11
Click the “Decimal” radio button in the “Edit” window. Here, write the value corresponding to your Internet connection, which in this case is 256 Kbps.
-
12
Click “OK” for saving the settings.
