How to Use a Map-Based GPS Car Navigation System

One type of GPS (Global Positioning System) navigation system involves a monitor that displays a map; the other kind uses voice recognition and a text display of the street you're on. These instructions are for an Alpine map-based system.

Things You'll Need:

    Select a Known Destination

  1. Step 1

    Read the instructions that come with the product.

  2. Step 2

    Turn on the car's ignition.

  3. Step 3

    Turn on the navigation system. A disclaimer will appear on the screen.

  4. Step 4

    Press Enter on the remote to remove the disclaimer.

  5. Step 5

    Press the Menu button on the remote.

  6. Step 6

    Using the Up and Down keys on the remote control, select how you want the system to find your route. When the selection is highlighted, push Enter on the remote control. A new screen appears with a list of selections.

  7. Step 7

    Using the Up and Down keys, choose a site for your destination, and press Enter. A map appears, and the system calculates the route.

  8. Step 8

    Listen to the voice prompting you to begin the trip. A map of the route appears on screen. As you approach a turn, the screen changes to a turning screen. The name of the street to turn on appears at the top of the screen; the name of the street you are traveling on appears at the bottom of the screen. An arrow shows which way to turn, and a voice prompts you to turn.

  9. Step 9

    Make the turn. Proceed to next turn when the system prompts you via voice and map.

  11. Step 1

    When you are in the Destination menu, select Advanced Category. A new screen appears with letters.

  12. Step 2

    Select the letters that spell out your interest - for example, "hockey" - using the remote control.

  13. Step 3

    Press Enter. A new screen appears with a list of sites related to the interest you spelled out.

  14. Step 4

    Scroll the list to find your desired destination. When it is highlighted, press Enter. A map appears, and the system calculates a route. Its voice prompts you to proceed.
