I Am Unable to Connect to a WRT54GL Router
Many within the world of Internet technologies will tell you to master reset your WRT54GL router if you are unable to connect to it with a computer. A master reset is quick and often resolves the issue, but if you do not feel like jumping straight to a master reset or you want to diagnose the issue properly, there are many other steps that could help you resolve the issue before it it becomes necessary to reset the router.

Reboot your entire network. To do so, turn off your computers, router and modem in that order. Once off, turn on the modem and wait until the "Data" light illuminates. Turn on the router and wait until the "Internet" and "Wireless" Light illuminate. Turn on the computer, allow it to boot up and then check the Internet. If the Internet does not work, move to the next step.

Inspect the cabling that connects your WRT54GL router to your modem. The Ethernet cable plugs into the "Ethernet" port located on the back of the cable. The other end of the cable connects to the WAN port located on the back of the router. If the cable is connected properly, replace the cable with a different Cat5 Ethernet cable. Reboot the network in the same manner as Step 1. If the computer does not connect to the Internet, go to the next step.

Connect the router directly to a computer and access the router's network settings. To connect the router, plug an Ethernet cable into one of the LAN ports located on the back of the router. Plug the other end into the Ethernet port of the computer. Enter 192.168.0.1 into the web browser of the computer. Enter "admin" into the user name and password field and press "Enter" on the keyboard.

Click on the "Setup" hyperlink and ensure the DHCP server is enabled. If not, enable it and click on "Save Settings. Click on the "Wireless" hyperlink and ensure the SSID broadcast is enabled. If not, enable it and click on "Save Settings."

Write down the SSID name and then click on "Wireless Security." If security is enabled, write down the pass phrase. Disconnect the Ethernet cable connecting the router to the computer. If any changes were made to the router settings, reboot the network in the same manner as step one and then attempt to access the Internet. If the Internet does not work, move to the next step.

Access the Wi-Fi network manager icon located in the tool tray on the lower, right-hand corner of the computer screen. Once the manager wizard opens, ensure "WIFI ON" is located from the drop-down box on the lower left of the wizard. If not, enable it. The SSID (router name) is listed in the available networks. Click on it and select "Connect." If security is enabled, enter the pass phrase. Wait for the wizard to indication connection. If a connection is not established or you are still unable to access the Internet, move to the next step.

Put a pin into the reset hole located on the back of the router. Hold the pin in place until the lights flash. The router is reset to factory settings. Access the Wi-Fi manager icon and attempt to establish a network connection. If Internet connection is not established, consult Linksys for a router replacement.
