A wireless router allows access to the Internet from anywhere in your home.

A Comcast cable Internet connection is more than fast enough to share among the computers in your home, but it's inconvenient to run Ethernet cables around the house to all of them. A wireless network connects all the wireless-enabled computers in your home to the Internet and each other. For access to the Internet over the wireless network, the router must be connected to the Comcast cable modem.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the cable modem's power supply.

Unplug the Ethernet cable that connects your computer to the cable modem from the computer.

    • 3

Connect the Ethernet cable you just unplugged from your computer into the Ethernet port on your wireless router labeled "WAN," "WLAN" or "Internet." The exact label on your router varies by manufacturer and modem model; there will only be one of these options on your router.

    • 4

Plug in the cable modem's and wireless router's power supplies and wait two minutes.

    • 5

Turn on your computer and log in to your user account.

    • 6

Click on the wireless network reception icon in the bottom right-hand corner of the computer screen.

    • 7

Select your home wireless network from the list and enter the password. The default name of a wireless network that hasn't been set up yet is usually the name of the router's manufacturer. For example, a wireless router made by D-link creates a wireless network named "dlink."

Tips & Warnings

  • By default, wireless networks are not password protected, allowing others to access your network and potentially get at information on your computers.
