How to Configure a D-Link

How to Configure a D-Link thumbnail
D-Link routers have unique configurations.

D-Link routers are gateway peripherals that attach between the computer and DSL modem for Internet connection. D-Link routers allow users to set up home networking systems for allowing multiple computers to connect to the Internet via the router gateway. As many as four wired computers can attach to the D-Link at one time. It also offers capability for wireless networking. Setting up a home network requires the accurate and detailed configuration of your D-Link router.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Type the router address into the address bar of your Internet window. Note that the D-Link address (192.168.0.1) is not a live website but the internal site of the router. Your router will respond by showing a box requiring you to enter the network password. All passwords are set to the user name "admin" and the password is blank. Enter those details and click "OK."

    • 2

Observe the router home page for the internal settings. You may choose to set a dynamic IP address or a static IP address. You may need to contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to ask which settings you should observe. The dynamic IP host name will already be in the box below, as will the MAC address. To set a static IP, input the ISP address of your provider. Input the Subnet Mask (usually 255.255.255.0) and input the default gateway (for D-Link it is usually 192.168.0.1).

Click the "Wireless" tab on the left (placement may vary according to D-Link models). To set Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) encryption for wireless networking, select an Service Set Identifier (SSID) name for your network. Enable WEP by clicking the "Enable" button and choose a hex key for wireless computers to use on the network. The hex key is an alpha-numeric code based on the hexadecimal scale. Key lengths will vary according to the level of bit encryption.

Set WPA-PSK encryption by clicking the "Home" tab and the "Wireless" tab to the left. This type of encryption requires a pass phrase instead of a hex key and is an alternative form of encryption. Your pass phrase is of your own choosing and will recognize you when you enter the system.

Assign IP addresses to multiple computers, which requires IP allocation. Click "Home" and "DCHP." Click "DCHP Client" and select a client from the list. The Name field and MAC address field should have the correct details showing. If so, click the "Clone" button. You may now assign an IP address to another computer or regulate how many random IP addresses the D-Link will assign. Assign IP addresses from 192.168.1.100 through 192.168.0.105 (for five computers). The final three digits will be the set IP addresses for any extra computers on the network. If you only have two, set the limit to 192.168.0.102.

Tips & Warnings

  • D-Link routers each have a different setup and configuration. To choose the Help page for your own D-Link, see the product page link in Resources. For help with general configuration, use the emulator page linked in the Resources section.
