How to Send Big JPG Files Without Quality Loss

How to Send Big JPG Files Without Quality Loss thumbnail
Digital photographs stored as JPEGs take up a lot of space on a computer.

Photographers, artists and medical imaging specialists use Joint Photographic Experts Group, or JPEG, type files to store and present digital photos because JPEGs provide high-quality images that utilize a wide spectrum of colors. Because this type of file uses 24 bits of memory for each pixel, JPEG file sizes can quickly become very large, especially for high-megapixel (MP) images. Photo-editing programs can compress these files; however, any JPEG compression results in a decline in the image's quality. Sending large JPEGs can clog a recipient's e-mail inbox, and every e-mail provider limits the file size a user can send and receive.

Instructions

    • 1

      Launch your Internet browser.

    • 2

Go to a website that offers free transfer of large files by typing the web address of that site into your Web browser's navigation bar. These websites enable you to upload a large file (such as a JPEG) and then permit a user you designate to download that file. You do not need to join these websites for file transfers less than a certain size, typically anywhere from 100MB to 2GB. See the Resources section for options.

    • 3

Select the file on your computer that you wish to send. Click the "Add File" or "Select File" button on the website. Navigate to the folder that contains the JPEG file you wish to send. Double-click on that file.

    • 4

Enter the recipient's e-mail address in the text box provided. You can send one file to multiple e-mail addresses.

    • 5

Enter your e-mail address. The website you use will need your e-mail for confirmation that you own the file. Also, the transfer website will send your recipient a notification to download the JPEG you're sending and will include your e-mail account as the sender of the file.

    • 6

Click the "Send it" or "Send" button on the website to begin uploading your JPEG file. Read over the Terms of Service and click "I accept." Click "OK" to exit after the file upload has finished.

Tips & Warnings

  • E-mail the person to whom you're sending the file to let him or her know that they should look for the notification from the website you used to send the JPEG. Let the recipient know to also check his or her e-mail's spam folder in case the e-mail provider's default settings send the notification there.
