How to Tow for AAA
The American Automobile Association (AAA) offers members help with car breakdowns, car insurance and other auto-related services. One of the most common services that members utilize is towing. When a member's car breaks down, a AAA technician will tow them to a mechanic. Because the AAA has chapters in all 50 states and members breakdown every day, there is always work for towing personnel. The application process for this position is conducted through the AAA website.

Obtain a tow truck driver certificate. First, go your state DMV and obtain a commercial driver's license (CDL) that allows you to drive larger trucks. If necessary, attend a commercial driving school, then take the CDL test. Then apply for a tow truck driver certificate, also through the DMV. The tow truck driver test is a demonstration test where the driver performs towing operations under observation. Rules vary from state to state, but generally a tow truck driver's certificate lasts five years.

Create a resume. Be sure to list all relevant experience in the automotive and customer service fields. AAA will want to know that you are technically competent with towing equipment and that you are able to interact well with people in even stressful situations. Be sure to list your towing license and other relevant certifications. Save the resume as a computer file in your preferred word processor.

Go to the AAA home page and scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page. On the bottom left portion of the page, click the "Careers" link. When you arrive at the Career Center page, click on the "Search Our Jobs" tab on the far right.

Perform a job search with the keyword "tow." View the individual listings to see which position best match your location and skill set. When you decide on a specific position, click on the link. and at the bottom of the job announcement click on the "Submit Your Resume to this Job" button. Upload your resume from your computer.

Prepare for your interview. Find a good interview prep book and practice answering questions from it. Some common interview questions are "What's your greatest strength/weakness?" or "How would you handle a difficult customer?" The interview will also likely have some technical questions about your towing and automotive experience, so prepare for those as well.

Call your listed references and let them know that they can expect a call from a potential employer. Preferably you should pick references who have worked with you firsthand in a towing or automotive-related position. It is important to give your references a heads-up so that they have an idea of what they will say about you and your job performance. If you are selected for a towing job with AAA, be sure to call your references back and thank them.
