How to Make Your Own Wedding Invitation With Onion Paper

How to Make Your Own Wedding Invitation With Onion Paper thumbnail
Wedding invitations are an important part of wedding planning.

Elegance and a handmade touch make the lightweight, almost translucent onion skin paper appealing. This type of paper is found at paper supply stores and online retailers in a variety of colors and is made from cotton. Popular uses for onion skin paper include origami, wrapping paper, calligraphy and pen and ink drawings. Using the paper to make your wedding invitations gives them a light, airy feel and is fairly simple task.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide if you will be hand-lettering the invitations or printing them. If you're having a small wedding and are good with calligraphy, you may want to consider writing them out yourself. Printing the invitations from a standard computer printer also works. Onion skin paper was commonly used with typewriters, so it's durable enough to work in a printer.

    • 2

Decide on the layout of the invitation. Whether you're lettering it by hand or printing it, do a test run or two with the layout so you can tweak it to your liking. This involves either printing a copy onto the onion skin paper or practicing your lettering on an ordinary piece of paper.

    • 3

Print or hand-letter the invitations on the onion skin paper.

    • 4

Cut the onion skin paper to the size you desire, using a paper cutter.

    • 5

Choose a colored piece of card stock to use as a background. Onion skin paper is so thin that the light shines through, so adding a background color makes the invitation easier to read.

    • 6

Cut the card stock to the size you desire with a paper cutter. You may want to cut it slightly larger than the onion skin paper to have a colored border.

    • 7

Decide on a ribbon color. For a sophisticated look, you can tie the card stock to the onion skin paper.

    • 8

Line the onion skin paper up with the card stock and punch two holes along the top edge. Leave at least 2 inches of space between the holes.

    • 9

Cut the ribbon with scissors and thread into each hole from the back of the invitation. Tie in a bow.

Tips & Warnings

  • Each paper cutter may work in a different way. Be sure to read the instructions for your particular model for the best and safest way to cut the paper.
