How to Install Windows From an External USB CD Drive

External USB CD drives provide a way to read CDs on a computer that doesn't have a CD drive already built in, such as a small laptop. You can also use this USB CD drive to install the Windows operating system on your computer. Once you have installed the operating system, you no longer have to keep the CD drive connected to your computer, although you can if you want to continue using other CDs.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the Windows installation CD into your external USB CD drive and then plug the drive in to a USB port on your computer.

    • 2

Reboot your computer, open the boot menu (by pressing "F12," "ESC" or a similar key that is shown on the splash screen when you first start your computer) and select the USB CD drive boot option.

    • 3

Wait for the "Welcome to Windows XP Setup" screen to appear (it takes a few moments, so be patient) and then press the "Enter" key followed by the "F8" key.

    • 4

Select the drive on which you want to install Windows, press "C," press "Enter," highlight the drive again and press "Enter."

    • 5

Select the "Quick Format" option and press "Enter" to install Windows XP.
