How to Make a Linksys Wireless Router a Repeater

A repeater helps you extend the range of your network.

Setting up a Linksys router as a repeater gives you the ability to broadcast the wireless signal coming from your network to a wider area in your home or office. Using a repeater in your network limits weak areas that could cause signal loss. In order to use a second router on a network as a repeater, you first must disable the DHCP server. Once you do that, it is as simple as plugging the repeater into the router and you'll be up and running.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Plug an Ethernet cable into the LAN port labeled No. 1. Plug the other end of the cable into the Ethernet port located on the rear control panel of your computer. If you are using a laptop, plug the cable into the Ethernet port located on the side of the computer. A tethered connection is required to access the DHCP settings on the router.

    • 2

Access 192.168.0.1 via the address bar on a web browser. When the pop-up screen for login appears, enter "Admin" into the username field and leave the password field blank. If this username and password do not work, master reset the router and try again. To reset the router, place a small pointy object into the reset hole located on the back.

    • 3

Locate and click on the "Setup" hyperlink and then click on the "Basic Setup" hyperlink.

    • 4

Select the "Disable" button to the right of the phrase "Local DHCP server." Disabling DHCP converts the router into a repeater.

    • 5

Locate the phrase "Local IP address" and change the IP address from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.1.1. Every piece of equipment on a network must have a different IP address. This ensures the Linksys router has a different IP address than the main router on the network.

    • 6

Select "Save Settings" to save the settings on the router.

    • 7

Remove the Ethernet cable from the router and the computer. Plug the Ethernet cable into the WAN port of the Linksys router. Plug the other end of the cable into the WAN port located on the back of the router already connected to your network. The Linksys router now repeats the signal of the established router.

The primary router is connected to a cable modem via the WAN port, I disconnect the cable from the cable modem and plug that end into the wan port of the "repeather" now the network is no longer connected to the internet? Can the repeather no be disconnected from the primary router and placed where its needed and the primary router re-connected to the modem? If so I think you needed a "step 8" here.T

This is nonsense! In point 7 you have to connect both routers through their WAN (not LAN) ports, and because every router only have one WAN port you end up not having any WAN access (Internet) from your LAN! Great!!!!
