The Windows XP operating system can be restored after upgrading to Vista on your Dell XPS 400 desktop computer by reinstalling XP. Windows XP must be installed over the Vista installation due to the fact that Windows Vista cannot be manually uninstalled. In this process, Vista will be erased from the Dell XPS 400's hard disk drive (HDD) and replaced by XP.

Press the power button on the front of your Dell XPS 400 desktop PC to start the computer. Open the DVD or CD drive by pressing the eject button on the tower and load the Windows XP installation CD into your system.

Click on the "Install Windows XP" button as soon as the "Welcome to Windows XP" window is displayed on your monitor. Choose the "Upgrade (Recommended)" option when asked which installation method you would like to use, and click "Next" to proceed.

Enter the 25 digit alphanumeric product key that came included with the Windows XP CD. Your Dell XPS 400 computer will have a product key sticker with the 25 -digit code on it if it came with Windows XP. Click the "Next" button to validate your copy of the operating system.
